MANILA – Communications with the hardest-hit parts of the Philippines remained cut off on Saturday, a day after Typhoon Haiyan struck the archipelago, but early reports indicated that the storm inflicted a devastating toll.

An estimated 10000 people might have been killed in the central Philippine province of Leyte alone, which was almost completely destroyed by the powerful typhoon Haiyan, local authorities said.
